Having a business means engaging with your social and cultural context. As a business owner, you are surrounded by an economic, social, and political framework and should learn how to interact with it. Out of the three, the most complicated one to deal with is likely the political factor. Knowing what problems your business is facing and advocating for your rights in front of policy-makers is a demanding goal to set for yourself. Luckily, this is not the kind of thing you need to do alone. For every field of business, unions and lobbying organizations look out specifically for your needs and present proposals to the policy-makers to facilitate your growth and well-being.

How does lobbying work?

The European Parliament explained practicing lobbying as ā€œAll types of interest representatives that can provide Parliament with knowledge and specific expertise in numerous economic, social, environmental and scientific areas. They can play a key role in the open, pluralist dialogue on which a democratic system is based.ā€

All unions have different committees, with each a communication director. Most of their tasks revolve around discussing with various stakeholders, governing groups, and representatives. Only when they reach a common agreement and the decision is approved by the executive board, they will present a new policy proposal.

The advantages of teaming up

When like-minded businesses in the field report the same problems or goals and take collective action to find the best approach, their voices are amplified, their opinions become more relevant to decision-makers, and measures are more likely to be taken. The union’s role becomes crucial when not everybody agrees: finding compromises and avoiding biased solutions is essential to maintain a fair market where everybody has the same growth opportunities. All this can only be carried out transparently while adhering to ethical values to maintain the trust of policy-makers and business owners.

Resource and responsibility

In my opinion, being able to participate in lobbying and join trade unions is not only a right but a responsibility for your company. By actively engaging in the democratic process, businesses can contribute to the development of policies that support their interests but also benefit society and everybody else: you have to be mindful and have an orientation for a better future.
